What Content Credentials are
Content Credentials are a digitally signed label based on an open standard called C2PA. Apps such as Adobe Photoshop and Firefly, AI image tools such as ChatGPT, and some newer cameras and phones attach them to images they create or edit. The label records how the image was made and changed, and the signature makes it hard to alter without anyone noticing.
What ScrubPic shows
- Type
- How the image was made: AI-generated, edited with AI, camera photo, screenshot and more.
- Made with
- The app that created or last saved the image.
- AI tool
- The AI tool involved, if the label names one.
- Edits
- Changes such as cropping, colour adjustments or combining images.
- Author
- The name the creator chose to attach, if any.
- Signed by
- The company whose certificate signed the label.
- Signed on
- The time the signature was made.
- History
- How many earlier versions the label records.
If the image went through several apps, ScrubPic checks the whole history, so an AI-generated image that was later edited in Photoshop still shows as AI-generated.
What it can’t tell you
- ScrubPic reads and shows what the label says, but doesn’t verify the digital signature. For a full check, use the official Content Credentials Verify site.
- No label doesn’t mean an image is real. Many apps don’t add one, and labels are lost when an image is screenshotted or re-saved.
- Some AI tools also hide an invisible watermark in the picture itself. That’s separate from Content Credentials and isn’t read by ScrubPic.
A privacy note
Content Credentials can include personal details. Adobe apps, for example, can add your name and links to your social media accounts. Before posting images made in these apps, check what the label says about you. More about Content Credentials
Questions
Can ScrubPic tell whether any image is AI-generated?
No. It reads the Content Credentials label when an image has one. It doesn’t analyse the picture itself, and many images carry no label at all.
What do “Computer-generated” or “Composite” mean?
They are the label’s own description of how the image was made, taken from a standard list. ScrubPic translates them into plain words.
Can I remove Content Credentials?
ScrubPic removes them along with the other hidden information unless you choose to keep them. Some platforms ask you to say when content is AI-generated, so check their rules before posting.
