Remove location from photos

See where a photo was taken, then remove the GPS before you share it.

  • Owner name

Why your photos contain a location

When your camera app is allowed to use location, your phone writes the exact GPS coordinates into every photo it takes. It often adds the altitude, the direction the camera was facing and the satellite time as well. None of this is visible in the picture, but it travels with the file.

In your own gallery that’s useful: it puts your photos on a map. It becomes a problem when the original file reaches someone else. A photo taken at home can reveal your address, and a set of photos can show where you go and when.

Who can see it

Anyone who receives the original file can read the location with free tools. That includes photos sent by email, shared through cloud links, sent with AirDrop, uploaded to websites that keep originals, or sent as a “document” or “file” in WhatsApp or Telegram. Large social networks usually remove the location from the copies other people download.

How to remove it with ScrubPic

  1. Drop your photos into the box above, or tap Choose files.
  2. Check the Location row. ScrubPic shows the coordinates and the nearest town, worked out on your device.
  3. Save the cleaned copy. The location and everything else hidden is removed. To keep something, like the date, tap Choose what to delete and untick it.

Your original file isn’t changed, and the picture isn’t re-compressed, so the cleaned copy looks exactly the same.

Stop your phone adding it

  • iPhone: Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services › Camera › Never. When sharing from Photos, you can also tap Options and turn off Location. Full iPhone guide
  • Android: open your camera’s settings and turn off the location option, called Save location on Pixel phones and Location tags on Samsung. Full Android guide

Photos you’ve already taken keep their location until you remove it.

Questions

Does removing the location change the photo?

No. Only the hidden information is removed. The image data stays exactly the same, so there is no loss of quality.

Does Instagram show where my photo was taken?

Instagram removes the GPS data from the copies other people can download. A location you add yourself as a tag is separate and is shown publicly. Removing it before you post means the location never leaves your phone.

Can I remove the location from many photos at once?

Yes. Drop as many photos as you like and save them all together as a ZIP file.

Does it work with iPhone HEIC photos?

Yes. HEIC, JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF are supported, and each photo stays in its original format.
