How to remove location from iPhone photos

Every photo your iPhone takes can carry the exact spot where you took it. Here’s how to stop that, share without it, and clean the photos you already have.

1. Stop the camera saving location

Go to Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services › Camera and choose Never.

New photos and videos won’t contain a location from then on. Photos you already took keep theirs, and the Photos app can no longer place new photos on its map.

2. Share a photo without its location

  1. Open Photos and select the photos you want to share.
  2. Tap Share, then Options at the top.
  3. Turn off Location. You’ll see “Location Not Included” above Options.
  4. Share as usual.

This only applies to that one share, and only when you share from the Photos app.

3. Remove it from photos you already have

In the Photos app, open a photo, swipe up or tap the info button, then tap Adjust next to the map and choose No Location. This changes the photo in your library.

To make clean copies before sending them anywhere, without the date, phone model and other details either, use ScrubPic:

  1. Open ScrubPic in Safari and tap Choose files.
  2. Pick your photos and check what each one reveals.
  3. Tap Save to Photos to keep the cleaned copies.

Videos have a location too

iPhone videos store the location in the same way. The Camera setting above stops it for new videos, and the Options switch works when you share videos from Photos. What else is hidden in videos

Do Messages, Mail or AirDrop remove it?

Not by themselves. Photos sent with Messages, Mail or AirDrop keep their location unless you turned it off in Options. Most social networks remove it from public copies, but it depends on the app.

Check your own files. See what they reveal and remove it, free and without uploading.
