How to remove location from Android photos

Android phones can save the exact spot where each photo was taken. Menu names differ between phone makers, but the steps are similar everywhere.

1. Turn off location in the camera

Open your Camera app, go to its settings and turn off the location option:

  • Google Pixel: Save location
  • Samsung Galaxy: Location tags
  • Other phones: look for Location, GPS tag or Geotag.

To be sure, you can also take away the camera’s permission: Settings › Apps › Camera › Permissions › Location, then choose Don’t allow. Menu names vary a little between Android versions.

2. Share without location

On Samsung Galaxy phones, select photos in Gallery, tap Share and tick Remove location data before choosing an app. Other gallery apps may not have this option, so clean the photo first if you’re not sure.

3. Remove it from photos you already have

In Google Photos, open a photo, swipe up to see its details, tap the edit icon next to the location and choose Remove location. It works one photo at a time.

To clean copies of many photos at once, including the date, phone model and everything else hidden:

  1. Open ScrubPic in Chrome and tap Choose files.
  2. Pick your photos and check what each one reveals.
  3. Tap Save all to download the cleaned copies.

Does WhatsApp remove it?

Photos sent the normal way through WhatsApp are compressed and lose their location. Photos sent as a document arrive unchanged, location included. How other apps compare

Check your own files. See what they reveal and remove it, free and without uploading.
