What phone videos carry

Videos from phones and cameras store information about the recording alongside the picture and sound:

  • Location: iPhones and many Android phones save the GPS coordinates where the recording started.
  • Device: the phone’s make and model, and often its software version.
  • Dates: when the video was recorded, sometimes with your time zone.
  • Tracks: action cameras and drones can record a separate GPS and motion track that follows you for the whole clip.
  • Software: the app or encoder that saved the file.

How ScrubPic cleans a video

Most tools re-export the whole video to remove metadata, which takes time and lowers quality. ScrubPic edits only the small part of the file that holds the information and leaves the video and sound untouched, so even a large file is done in about a second.

  1. Drop your videos into the box above.
  2. See what they reveal: location with the nearest town, device, dates and data tracks.
  3. Save the cleaned copies. To keep the location, date or device, tap Choose what to delete first.

Supported formats

MP4, MOV and M4V, including iPhone videos and files from most Android phones, GoPro and DJI cameras. MKV, WebM and AVI files aren’t supported yet.

Questions

Will the video look or sound different?

No. ScrubPic doesn’t re-encode anything, so the picture and sound stay exactly the same, bit for bit.

Is there a size limit?

Large videos work, including files of several gigabytes on a computer, because ScrubPic only reads the small part of the file that holds the information.

Can I keep the recording date?

Yes. Tap “Choose what to delete” and untick Date & time. You can also keep the location or the device name. Everything else is always removed.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. ScrubPic works in Safari and Chrome on phones as well as on computers.
